Instagram- Black & White isn’t just a filter

Instagram- A 35 billion dollar company trailing behind social media giant Facebook.
Instagram- A 35 billion dollar company, how are they so successful?

Instagram- Terms of Service

“We reserve the right to modify or terminate your service or access”- Instagram claims this is for non compliance with the community guidelines, but there is no opt out button, there is no exact reason for why this would occur, its Instagrams use of discretion on who has an account, basically.

“We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to change these Terms of Use from time to time”- As stated before Instagram can “update” their terms of service whenever they want, on their own discretion. Ha yeah “own discretion” is great, police use it all the time right?

“Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service. Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service”- Oh I hereby grant this company a fully paid TRANSFERABLE sub-license to use MY content anywhere on the www?? When I saw this, it reminded me of all the money I’m losing out on, and all the money people make instagram with no compensation whatsoever. If I post a fitness picture (because let’s face it, that’s what insta is known for), and I am a ripped giant, Instagram can take my photo without notice, without permission and sell it to a fetish website for women with muscles (yes those sites exist).

Security breach? NOT! “You are responsible for any activity that occurs through your account”- Basically you can report things, block users, flag posts, but if you get hacked it’s on you. Not much help from Instagram.

I must admit I did NOT read the terms of service of well…any of my social media accounts. The lawyer jargon and page after page doesn’t sound fun to me at all. However Instagram has a very short Terms page, that I encourage all of my fellow peers, and anyone to read. Its a fast easy read, and it will enlighten you and what Instagram is actually doing with your content. We live in a social media bubble were we think we are just posting pics/videos to the internet and thats where it stays. The harsh reality is, thats not true. Our pictures, profiles, videos and names are being shared, sold and profited from. I really wish it wasn’t so black and white with all the social media giants, give us some grey to work with!
