5 Awesome Holiday Activities to do in Salt Lake City

So you found yourself in Salt Lake City for the holidays. Whether you’re here visiting friends or family there are plenty of awesome things that you can do to liven up your experience even more. Here’s a list of five family friendly yet totally fun activities that you can take part in here in Salt Lake City.

EVE Winterfest

From December 29 to December 31 EVE Winterfest takes place in downtown Salt Lake City. This event is family-friendly or a great way to celebrate with your friends’ downtown enjoying a couple libations while you’re at it. For only 20 bucks you get an all access adult three day pass or you can pay $15 for a single day and don’t worry kids under 10 are free. With this pass you can enjoy live concerts complete with adult beverages from the Hops Rising Lounge, admission to museums and family activities, and even admission to a Utah Jazz game. The event takes place across 12 separate venues during the three days and is not to be missed. And while you’re there make sure you check out the 20 foot wide disco ball that hangs above the Countdown Stage at the Salt Palace.

Go to a Jazz Game

Speaking of Jazz games, the Utah Jazz have plenty of home games over the course of December into January and tickets are not too expensive. You can check out Gordon Hayward and Dante Exum of the Jazz do their thing and even have a chance to see some of the out-of-state talent come in and put up a show all while making some new memories to share around the holiday dinner table. Expect to pay between $20 and $40 a ticket but keep your eyes peeled for special deals on E-bay and KSL Classifieds.

See the Lights

Salt Lake City is also known for its amazing light displays. Every December the LDS church decks out there Temple Square with hundreds of thousands of different lights as well as a life-size nativity scene and various video presentations in the visitor center as part of their Temple Lights display. If you want to take less religious approach Salt Lake City’s Hogle Zoo hosts Zoo Lights where the Zoo is all lit up and you can walk through, see the animals, and the lights for less than $10 a person.

Ice skating at the Galivan Plaza

If you have never been ice-skating or if you are a seasoned pro Galivan Plaza is an awesome place to go. Located in the heart of downtown adults, seniors, and children can get together and hit the ice. When the winter air is too much and you get cold there’s a full concession stand with hot beverages and snacks. The rink is open seven days a week with midnight hours Friday and Saturday and parking located right across the street.

Solitude Mountain Resort

Feel like getting out of the city for a day or two take the family up Solitude Mountain Resort where you can take part in some amazing skiing and snowboarding or if you’re not that active they also offer snowshoeing and Ice skating. While you’re up there check out some of the great food they have to offer from the Honeycomb Grill or grab a drink and some hand rolled sushi at the Thirsty Squirrel. The views are breathtaking and well worth the 30 minute ride up the canyon oh and did I mention you can take the public UTA bus up there so you can keep your eyes off the road and on the scenery.

The Top Five Worst Christmas Songs Ever for SLCC Students.

When it comes to Christmas music you either love it or you hate it. There is not too much of a middle ground. There are some songs, however, that both lovers and haters of Christmas music can come together and agree are awful. I’ve created a list of what I think are the worse Christmas songs of all times and I distilled it down to five terrible songs. So here it goes.

5. Yingle Bells by Yogi Yorgensen (1948)

This song is exactly what you think it is. Although it might not be the worst song on this list, the true horror is that it was number 7 on the hot new song charts when it was released in 1948.

4. Christmas Shoes by Newsong (1999)

This song is awful. I mean, the story is about a little boy whose mom is dying and so he has to get her new shoes because that’s what you do when your mom is dying right? Anyway, this song is just sad and who wants to be sad at Christmas time?

3. Santa Claus Defeats The Martian Theme From Santa Claus Defeats The Martians (1964)

This song is actually the theme song from one of the greatest Christmas films ever released. This song and movie are so bad that they are great. The movie is like The Room of Christmas movies. This song is just so cheesy and stupid.

2. The Chipmunks Christmas Song by Alvin And The Chipmunks (1958)

I might get some flack from people who love this song, but my response would be, “why?” I mean, what appeals to you about this song? The voice distortion is so annoying and the lyrics are ridiculous as well. Alvin and his delightful chipmunk friends bring nothing new to Christmas music. Just stop Alvin. And please never make another Christmas song ever again.

1. Santa Claus Has Got The Aids by Tiny Tim (1994)

I love this song, and I’m not a Grinch or a Scrooge, but I’m just completely blown away by how such a song got made. It was originally made for a weight loss supplement ad, but despite that the lyrics are so bad. “Santa Claus has got the aids this year. He won’t be around to spread his Christmas cheer.” I think I’ve said enough.

Self-Care During Finals

Being in the midst of the holiday season is stressful enough and that stress can magnify if you’re a student cramming for final projects and exams. When we feel overwhelmed it can be easy to neglect our own well-being and burn out as a result. Improving selfcare skills can help students manage when their just trying to survive the December hurdles.

 1. Don’t put off sleep! You will be more effective if you’re well rested. Set a specific time to go to bed even if you haven’t progressed in your work as much as you would’ve liked. Getting a refreshing night’s rest will help you be in a better mood, feel calmer, and it’ll strengthen your memory – it’s what you need to retain what you just studied.

 1. Go for nourishing food rather than binging on caffeine and sugars. And make sure you eat at regular times to maintain your endurance. It’s totally okay to drink a little coffee to wake up, and to treat yourself to a holiday cookie but consuming large quantities of caffeine and processed sugars can increase your body’s stress and anxiety.

 1. Plan ahead. Make a list of all the assignments and exams you have and make sure to note their due dates. Making a plan can help keep you from procrastinating until the last minute or from pulling all-nighters. Making a battle plan can make you feel a little less overwhelmed and give you a direction on where to start working.

 1. Include fun activities and breaks in your schedule! Make time to have see a friend on a night you can get away from homework. If you can’t find enough time between studying and holiday obligations, schedule things as simple as calling a loved one, meditating, or taking a 20 minute break every 2 hours of studying just to listen to music. Do whatever you can that makes you feel refreshed and happy.

 1. Drink plenty of water. This is a basic survival skill that has to be utilized every day. If you have to, set a reminder to drink a glass of water every couple of hours.

 1. Move! If you normally run for an hour the morning, try to keep as much of that routine as possible. Even if it’s minimized to as little as a 15 minute run. Make that you regularly get up away from those books or that screen and stretch.

 1. Get away for a little while. Go for a walk to look at lights or snowy landscapes. Watch your favorite holiday movie – the one that makes you roar with laughter or cry your eyes out. Make cards or cookies and give them out. Just because your busy doesn’t mean you should miss out on enjoying the season! (Also know it’s completely okay to say no to events and activities you don’t have time for or are not really feeling up to go to. Do what’s best for you!)

 1. Don’t forget to utilize the wellness center on campus. Every campus should have one accessible to students, it’s just a matter of looking or asking. SLCC definitely has a Center for Health and Counseling.

 1. Treat your self! If you’re feeling stressed take a break and show yourself some love, have a mug full of hot chocolate or tea, take a long hot shower or bath, do whatever makes you feel well-cared for.

Good luck and take care!

Santa Claus Conspiracy Theories.. And Free Puppies

#1 Santa Doesn’t Exist

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 9.56.58 AM.png

The numbers don’t add up. Santa has 31 hours to get in and get out. This is assuming he’s traveling with the rotation of the Earth. Santa has to hit 91.8 million homes in that time span. Which means he has to travel at 650 miles per second. Now if every gift weighed only 2 pounds, then the payload of his sleigh would be 353,000 tons. Think about it; 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second would create a lot of air resistance and not to mention centrifugal force. Enough the vaporize Santa instantly. When you actually do the math, the numbers point to the truth.

#2 Santa Claus is Satan

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 10.00.46 AM.png

It all makes sense now. Santa is eternal. Santa wears red. Santa is omnipresent. also Omniscient, and Omnipotent.

#3 Reindeer eat Magic Mushrooms to Fly

This would explain a lot. No wonder grandmas are getting run over by reindeers. Also who breathalyzing santa, for all we know he’s flying around after several rounds of eggnog too.

#4 Santa is getting help from Rail Road company

THE TRAILER FOR MY NEW REALITY SHOW from <a

Its obvious. How else could he deliver all his gifts in one night. An ex employee of the railroad company CSX has spoken out and he tied all the loose ends.

#5 Santa is a part of the illuminati

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.16.45 AM.png

Christmas has always been linked to pagan holidays. The whole tradition itself is very ritualistic. Decorating a tree, putting gifts underneath it, and lighting the top with a star; it all ties into the occult and the illuminati.

Holiday TV episodes

Holiday TV episodes to get you in the mood for the holidays

 • A Very Supernatural Christmas- Supernatural.

There’s nothing that says Christmas like Sam and Dean Winchester like hunting an Anti-Claus or is it really an Anti-Claus or something else? If you’d like to watch it is available on Netflix

 • “The Strike” – Seinfeld

The Strike is also known as the Festivus episode. Kramer goes back to work at the donut shop he went on strike at many years ago. You also learn about the holiday George Costanza’s father invented: Festivus where you gather everyone around the table and tell them how they wronged you over the years. This holiday also includes a metal pole instead of a tree and something called the “Feats of Strength.” There is even a website that is dedicated to this holiday http://festivusweb.com

 • “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”- Community

Claymation and singing! Is this Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer? Nope, It’s Abed’s mental break over Christmas and how everything and everyone is in claymation form and sings to find the true meaning of Christmas! (Yes, Professor Ian Duncan is THE John Oliver)

 • Christmas party- The Office

Oh, the office. How I love thee. I think this is one of the episodes that truly exemplify what the holidays are all about…. In Michael Scott’s head. There is Yankee swap, booze, arguing, Dwight. I think this episode truly captures what it is like to work in an office.

 • “The 23rd” – New Girl

This episode has everything! Sexy Santa! The awkward “ you don’t know what to get someone your dating for a short while” dilemma, trying not to miss an important flight. There is a special appearance of Stephen Amell from hit TV show Arrow as Cece boyfriend(Which I didn’t notice until I was watching and trying to figure out where I knew him from)

 • The one with holiday armadillo- Friendsarmadillo

How do you teach a child about Hanukkah? Well Ross decided to teach his son Ben about Hanukkah by dressing up as the Holiday Armadillo!(Because he couldn’t rent a santa costume that late in the year.) and the results are hilarious just watch

 • My own personal Jesus- Scrubsscrubs

Working in a medical profession is hard when the holidays come around. In this episode J.D sees a miracle. Turk loses faith and you get to see what the holidays are like in the ER.

 • Amends- Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Not your typical holiday episode it’s darker and more raw then a few on this list. Angel AKA Angelus is haunted by his victims he killed. I personally liked this episode but I could understand how some might feel like this shouldn’t be on the list. I feel like it should because there is so much heart and soul in this episode and the struggles the Slayer faces every single day of the year doesn’t matter if it is the holidays or not.

 • Lexmas – SmallvillleLexmas

This is more of a Lex Luthor-centric episode because when Lex is shot he is visited by the ghost of his mother and shows him what his life would be like if he get out of the control of his father. It’s kind of like a Ghost of Christmas past by Charles Dickens but with Superman and Lex Luthor. Plus Clark Kent in a santa hat!Clarkinchrismtashat

 • The Polarizing Express- Psychpsychpic

Going with the Ghost of Christmas past idea, Shawn Spencer resident psychic for the Santa Barbra police department wonders where everyone would be if he didn’t come back to Santa Barbra.

Chuck Vs. Santa Claus

What says Christmas like a hostage situation, 15% mark ups at the Buy More and more Die Hard references and similarities then I can count. This episode shows what the show Chuck is all about!

 • The Chrismukkah that almost wasn’t – The O.C

Seth Cohen

Never heard of Chrismukkah? Well no worries Seth Cohen will tell you all about it. Chrismukkah is a super holiday mixed with Christmas and Hanukkah because his parents were in an interfaith marriage and thus Christmukkah was born! In my opinion all of the Chrismukkah episodes are wonderful but this was the one that started it all!

If you would like to see any of these episodes they are on most of the streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu.

Adobe Creative Suite

Adobe-LogoAdobe Creative Cloud is AMAZING. As a working professional for a digital marketing agency, I can personally say that I use this cloud based service daily. It features everything’s from Photoshop all the way to Indesign for website creation. As with every cloud based service, Adobe Creative Cloud allows you the ability to access all of the programs remotely from any desktop. This also gives you the ability to access and save your work from any desktop or laptop computer while being on a completely safe and secure network. *You just have to remember to log out of Adobe*

Adobe Creative Cloud make’s it affordable for just about anyone to own their services. As you can see above, they have a wide variety of packages based upon the needs of the consumers. The most amazing thing they offer in pricing: STUDENT PRICING! You can get all of these services as a student for only $19.99 a month! This has been huge for me as a student due to the fact that many of my classes require these services and with the cost of attendance and books on the rise, having affordable access to the Adobe Cloud is key for my success in the work field and at school.

I chose this cloud service solely for the fact that it is the industry leading digital media tool kit. It gives you access to all of the services you need in order to work on any aspect of digital work, while also allowing you to save and store that work on a secure remote accessible network.

iCloud is a cloud based storage/cloud computing service from Apply Inc. It stirred up its first storm on October 12th 2011, by July of 2013 the service hit 320 million users. This service helps people from all walks of life keep organized through various user friendly settings. It helps bring in the clutter of photos and dates and reminders all onto one platform. This can be used for families to set reminders for one another or co workers to remember meetings/important deadlines. This ever growing tool is one I couldn’t go with out.

If you are an iCloud user you have ability to fill that cloud with whatever you should feel suits your needs, may it be thousands of photos, apps, music, or documents. iCloud also gives you the ability to share your saved media across every compatible device you may acquire, so that when changing to a larger viewing screen, one with better keyboard, or sharing for a presentation, things do not get lost along the way. Also if something unexpected happens in the chaos of life you are able to recover your information off of a previous device seamlessly

There are 5 different storage plans for iCloud currently in effect. The first is free 5GB isn’t a ton but its great that they have one for free to begin with those couple thousand photos you’ll be taking. Each of these plans are incredibly affordable and truly handy if you need a HUGE amount of space to save things or if your like me who just needs a tad bit more space. I ran out of space on my 16 GB iPhone 5s very soon after upgrading, because of how large my iphoto storage was. Music wasn’t even an option for me at all anymore sadly! Then my iPhone showed me the options in the photo above ^ I now use the 20GB plan across 3 different devices and have not needed to upgrade due to storage on any of them. But incase you need that 1TB of storage you still have that option, Now that is a real win!

Apple’s iCloud security and privacy statement is incredibly long, however it does state that Apple uses a 128-bit AES encryption, which is the same encryption standard used by banks. With 320+ million users this cloud HAS to be a fortress so rest assured your information will be secure.

Why iCloud?

Well, for me iCloud is the simplest and best way to keep things organized. All of my devices even down to my TV have my photos instantly uploaded to them, this is very important to me. Now I no longer need to keep buying new USB drives when I lose my old one with ancient photos on it. All of my contacts can be resolved through my computer or phone now, if I receive a call through my computer I can continue with whatever I was doing before hand after saying good bye. I have been waiting years for features like these, all we need now is to combine these features with being able to push and pull pages around like Iron mans set up and life will be perfect!
