Is Periscope the New YouTube?

periscope2I’ve been hearing about this new thing on the web called Periscope.  Like most things on the web, I had no idea what it is so I did a little research.  I found this great article on smallbiztrends.com called, “What is Periscope and How do I use it?”  I’ll put a link at the end of the post.

Basically Periscope is a live version of Twitter.  It’s especially popular with Twitter users, and you can sign up through a Twitter account.  A person using the Periscope app can do a LIVE broadcast and share it with their followers.  Their followers can sign in to watch the broadcast and make comments and the person broadcasting can respond to their followers remarks during the live broadcast, truly making it an interactive event.  The broadcast then stays on Periscope for others to watch for 24 hours. After the 24 hour period, the broadcast is removed from the app, but the broadcast is still saved on the user’s mobile device and can then be uploaded, shared, published, etc just like any other video.

Periscope is a great app to show off your skills, especially if you’re a speaker. The app gives users the option to watch broadcasts from people you are following, and see if there are any broadcasts happening in your area.  The app gives you the option to see a global map and see what broadcasts happening globally might be of interest to you.  This article gives step by step instructions on how to sign up for Periscope using a Twitter account,or with out one, how to start a broadcast, and how to follow broadcasts.

So there you go!  You learn something new every day –  Periscope is sure to continue to increase in popularity especially as celebrities get involved.  I don’t think I’ll be going live any time soon though, but you never know!

Here’s a link to the article.  Enjoy!
