Like any other social media platform, Instagram allows users to upload photos and short videos through a mobile app. Users can add a caption to their posts, use hashtags and geotags to index these posts and make them searchable by other users. For some people, Instagram is a place where they can share what cool stuff is going on in their life and while others have turned their Instagram into a business enterprise of their own. It offers the opportunity to start a free business account to promote their brand and products. When Instagram first started out everyone was just sharing anything they want, there were no hashtags or picture editing features. Now it has grown into one of the largest social media platforms out there with endless possibilities.
What is the one Web 2.0 characteristic, platform, or feature you would find hard to give up if you had to…and why?”
The reason why I can never give up Instagram is because I use it as a place to share my disability story and help others see differently about people with disabilities. There’s no question that disability stigma is very prevalent in our society. Therefore, using social media platforms like Instagram’s to speak out about issues that can be very confrontational but will really help change the shift of our society in a positive way. Before I discovered other people like me on Instagram I was very ashamed of my disability because I did not feel like I was a part of the social norms. After seeing other people with disabilities share their stories it really inspired me to do the same. My goal is to change the way people think when they associate people with disability and what’s the “norms” of our society should be like. By sharing my own unique experience with living life with a disability I hope it shows everyone that we are all unique in our own way. It’s really awesome to be living in a generation where we can use social media to spread awareness and help make a difference.
