The Impact of Social Media- Jhandy Carrero

I was in class the other day and our professor played a documentary to show us how rapidly social media has been evolving while still retaining key elements. The documentary is called “Generation Like” it is from 2016 so not too old, but not up to date, here’s the link in case you want to watch it http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/generation-like/. The documentary featured people either in their mid-teens or mid-twenties who have found success through social media. For example, Tyler Oakley’s initial content was video blogs. Tyler over time had developed a strong fan base that would share/market his content for free. That was the kicker for me, the fact he became famous and essential turned himself into his own media company through his fans marketing his content for free. In 2022 Tyler Oakley is still a vlogger but has diversified his content to twitch streaming and podcast, here’s some info for you, http://twitch.tv/tytyoakley. Tyler Oakley and many others are prime examples of how social media has given people the ability to share content while distributing and selling it. This leads them to become their very own marketing company. After I had watched the documentary, I was shocked to realize that when on social media, we’re marketing for others for free. The key element of social media still exists today. You are either building your brand or the brands of others.
